About Bere Alston

The place and its homes

Positioned on a peninsula between the rivers Tamar and Tavy within the Tamar Valley National Landscape, this Devon village is surrounded by woodland and fields. Historically associated with silver and lead mining, the settlement later developed through market gardening and railway transport. Before the Reform Act 1832, it was a parliamentary borough returning two Members of Parliament. The area features historic architecture, including a school building erected by Sir John Maynard in 1665 that still forms part of the primary school today, with the date carved on a porch above the original red doorway. Landmarks such as The Edgcumbe Hotel and the local railway station mark the built environment. Older properties sometimes retain compact kitchen layouts where fitting modern domestic appliances requires careful measurement. When free-standing washing machines and washer dryers are installed under tight counters, pulling them out to inspect a blocked drain pump or a snapped drive belt can be difficult. If a fridge freezer, wine cooler or dishwasher is tucked into a confined space, restricted airflow can cause the compressor or motor to run hotter, placing extra strain on the internal components. We repair domestic appliances in customers' homes across the area, fixing faults on electric ovens, tumble dryers and microwaves.

02What we look out for

What these homes mean for your appliances

01

Blocked washing machine drain pumps

Washing machines fail to empty when debris blocks the drain pump filter. Coins or small items left in pockets can jam the pump impeller, stopping the water from draining away. This leaves clothes sitting in dirty water and prevents the machine from starting a spin cycle.

02

Fridge freezer compressor and thermostat failures

A fridge freezer will struggle to maintain the correct temperature if the thermostat fails or the compressor develops a fault. Restricted ventilation around the appliance makes the system work harder to remove heat, which can lead to ice building up or the cabinet becoming too warm.

03

Blown elements in electric ovens and cookers

When an electric oven stops heating but the fan and lights still work, the main heating element has usually failed. The internal wire breaks down over time through thermal expansion and contraction. We replace faulty elements in electric ovens, electric cookers and electric range cookers.

Yes, we travel from our Plymouth base to homes in rural environments surrounded by woodland and fields.

No, we do not work on gas cookers, gas hobs or any gas appliance. Our cooking appliance repairs are strictly for electric and induction models only. We fix electric ovens, electric cookers, electric range cookers, and electric or induction hobs in customers' homes.

Integrated dishwashers are fitted behind cabinet doors, which can make access difficult in older properties with small kitchen layouts. We unclip the wooden plinth and lower the appliance feet to slide the unit out. This allows us to reach the wash motor, heater or control module for repair.

A loud rumbling noise during the spin cycle indicates worn drum bearings. Washing heavy loads like thick coats or muddy outdoor gear places extra stress on the drum shaft. Over time, water penetrates the bearing seal, washing away the grease and causing the metal bearings to grind and fail.
