01How it works

Electric Cooker Repair, explained

How it works

Your electric cooker, properly understood

A freestanding electric cooker combines a hob, a grill and one or two ovens into a single unit. These sections operate independently but share a main terminal block and wiring harness connected to your household supply. When you turn a dial, a selector switch directs power to the relevant heating element, whether that is a ceramic zone on top, a grill element, or a fan oven element at the back. Thermostats monitor the internal temperature, cutting the power once the selected heat is reached and switching it back on as it cools.

Why it fails

What wears out

Because a cooker handles high electrical currents and intense heat, components degrade over time. Heating elements expand and contract during use, which eventually causes the internal filament to break or the outer casing to split. Selector switches and thermostats endure constant mechanical movement and thermal stress, leading to burnt contacts or inaccurate temperature readings. Cooling fans can seize up due to grease build-up, and door hinges can warp, preventing the oven from sealing properly and causing heat to escape.

A proper diagnosis

From your call to repaired

Diagnosing an electric cooker fault requires isolating the specific circuit that has failed. If a hob ring is not heating, the issue could be the element itself, the energy regulator behind the control knob, or a break in the wiring. A multimeter is used to check for continuity across these components to find the exact point of failure. If the cooker is tripping the electrics, an earth leakage test helps identify which part is causing the short circuit. All Appliance Care covers Plymouth and the surrounding areas in Devon and Cornwall for these repairs.

02Know the signs

When it is time to call us

01

The main oven fan is noisy or rattles when the cooker is turned on.

02

Food takes much longer to cook than the temperature dial suggests.

03

The cooker clock is flashing and the main oven will not start.

04

One of the ceramic hob zones stays on full heat and will not turn down.

05

The main circuit breaker trips immediately when you turn on the grill.

06

The oven door glass is loose or the hinges feel stiff when opening.

03Common faults

What usually lies behind it

01

Fan oven is blowing cold air

When the oven fan runs but no heat is produced, the circular heating element surrounding the fan has usually failed. The element filament breaks inside its casing, stopping the electrical circuit. The fan continues to circulate air, but it remains at room temperature.

02

Cooker trips the household electrics

A cooker will trip the circuit breaker or RCD if electrical current leaks to earth. This happens when the insulation inside a heating element breaks down, or if moisture reaches the wiring. Finding the fault requires testing each component individually with a multimeter.

03

Hob rings are not heating up

If a solid plate or ceramic zone stays cold, the element itself might have burnt out. Alternatively, the energy regulator switch behind the control dial may have failed, preventing power from reaching the hob. Both parts can be tested for electrical continuity to confirm.

04

Oven door will not close properly

A door that hangs loose or fails to shut tight allows heat to escape, ruining cooking times and melting the control knobs above. This is caused by worn or bent door hinges, or a perished rubber seal that no longer grips the oven frame.

05

Grill element only heats on one side

Many electric grills use a dual circuit element, allowing you to use a half grill or full grill setting. If only one side glows red, that specific side of the element has failed, or the selector switch is not sending power to both circuits.

No. We repair electric cookers only.

The most likely cause is a blown heating element. In a fan oven, the circular element at the back does the heating while the fan distributes the air. If the element filament breaks, the fan will still spin and the thermostat light may come on, but the oven will stay completely cold.

Yes, All Appliance Care repairs freestanding electric cookers that feature induction hobs. Induction zones use electromagnets to heat the pan directly, which requires different diagnostic steps compared to standard ceramic or solid plate hobs. We can investigate faults with induction modules, cooling fans and user interface boards.

If the entire cooker loses power while you are cooking, it might be overheating. A faulty cooling fan or a blocked vent can cause the safety thermostat to trip, shutting down the appliance to prevent damage. It could also be a loose connection at the main terminal block behind the cooker.
