Washing Machine Repair, explained
How it works
Your washing machine, properly understood
A washing machine relies on a sequence of mechanical and electrical steps to clean clothes. Water enters through solenoid valves, filling the drum until a pressure switch signals it has reached the correct level. The heating element warms the water, while the motor turns the drum to agitate the load. Once the wash cycle finishes, a drain pump removes the dirty water, allowing the machine to spin and extract moisture. Because these appliances handle water, heat and rapid movement, components endure significant stress. Moving parts like bearings and motor brushes wear down over time. Vibration can loosen wiring connections or damage suspension legs. Blockages in the pump or filter stop water from draining, which in turn prevents the machine from spinning. Door seals degrade and split, leading to leaks, while control boards can develop faults that stop the appliance from starting or cause it to trip the electrics. Finding the exact cause of a fault requires checking the machine systematically. A diagnosis involves inspecting the door lock and hinges, testing the heating element for continuity, and examining the pump for blockages. The motor and drive belt are checked, because the drum depends on both to turn smoothly. By tracing the fault to a specific part, such as a faulty valve or a worn seal, the exact issue is identified. 03Common faults
What usually lies behind it
01
The washing machine will not spin
When a machine refuses to spin, the control board may have detected that water is still inside the drum. This points to a blocked filter or a faulty drain pump. Worn motor brushes or a snapped drive belt will also stop the drum from turning during the cycle.
02
Water leaking from the front door
Leaks at the front of the appliance usually originate from the rubber door seal. Sharp objects left in pockets can puncture the rubber, or the material can degrade and split. A misaligned door hinge or a faulty catch can also prevent the glass from sealing correctly against the gasket.
03
The appliance trips the electrics
A washing machine that trips the circuit breaker usually has an electrical short to earth. The heating element is a prime suspect, as the internal insulation breaks down and allows water to reach the wiring. Damaged cables rubbing against the vibrating drum can also cause electrical faults.
04
The drum makes excessive noise
A loud rumbling noise during the spin cycle indicates that the main drum bearings have failed. If the noise is a sharp clicking or scraping sound, a foreign object like a coin or bra wire may be trapped between the inner stainless steel drum and the outer plastic tub.
05
The washing machine will not fill
If no water enters the drum, the inlet hoses may be kinked or the water supply valve might be turned off. Internally, the solenoid valves that open to let water in can fail electrically. A faulty pressure switch might also incorrectly signal that the machine is already full.

Washing Machines: your questions

Call 01752 922765Often yes. Drainage faults are frequently caused by a blocked filter or pump, which are among the more straightforward repairs. We will tell you what we find and what it costs before doing anything.
A machine pausing mid-cycle is usually waiting for a specific condition to be met. If the heating element has failed, the cycle halts because the water cannot reach the required temperature. A partial blockage in the drain pump can also cause the machine to time out and stop.
Yes. All Appliance Care repairs tumble dryers, washer dryers, dishwashers, fridges, freezers, fridge freezers and wine coolers. We also fix electric ovens, electric cookers, electric range cookers, electric hobs, induction hobs, cooker hoods and microwaves. We do not work on gas cookers, gas hobs or any gas appliance.
Low-temperature washes allow detergent residue and fabric softener to build up inside the drum and door seal. This creates an environment for mould and bacteria to grow, which produces a damp smell. Running a hot maintenance wash and cleaning the pump filter helps clear this residue.
We carry out domestic appliance repairs in customers' homes across Plymouth.
