About Newton Abbot
The place and its homes
Situated on the River Teign in the Teignbridge District of Devon, this market town and civil parish grew rapidly in the Victorian era as the home of the South Devon Railway locomotive works. Terraced streets were built to house the workers, and attractive villas sprang up around the town for the wealthier. In older terraced properties, kitchens can be compact. Fitting a standard washing machine or dishwasher into a tight space means the appliance cannot easily dissipate heat, which can put extra strain on components like the motor or heating element over time.

What that means for your appliances
The town sits in a landscape where the green represents the moors, black for the granite and white for the clay. In more recent years there have been highly disputed newer housing developments around the outskirts of the town, including Hele Park and Whitehill which have already been completed to the west and north of the town respectively. There are also planned developments at Houghton Barton to the west and Wolborough Barton to the south as part of a bigger plan to add almost 5,000 more houses. Modern housing developments tend to feature open-plan layouts with integrated appliances. When a built-in fridge freezer or dishwasher develops a fault, the wooden cabinet door must be detached before the appliance can be pulled out for repair.
02What we look out for
What these homes mean for your appliances
01
Ventilation problems in compact terraced kitchens
Older terraced houses sometimes have smaller kitchens where appliances are pushed tightly against walls. Fridges and freezers need adequate airflow around the condenser coils to work efficiently. Without enough space, the compressor runs longer to maintain the temperature, which can lead to premature failure.
02
Repairing integrated dishwashers in modern homes
Newer housing developments often feature fitted kitchens with integrated dishwashers hidden behind matching cabinet doors. If the dishwasher stops draining or heating the water, the wooden fascia panel has to be removed and the machine pulled out from under the counter to access the internal parts.
03
Worn drum bearings in domestic washing machines
A washing machine that makes a loud rumbling noise during the spin cycle usually has worn drum bearings. Water leaking past the internal seal washes away the grease, causing the metal bearings to grind. Fixing this requires dismantling the machine to replace the bearings and the seal.

We do not work on gas cookers, gas hobs or any gas appliance. Our engineers only repair electric ovens, electric cookers, electric range cookers, and electric and induction hobs. We also fix washing machines, tumble dryers, dishwashers, fridges, freezers, wine coolers, cooker hoods, and microwaves.
Larger properties and attractive villas sometimes have spacious kitchens fitted with electric range cookers or wide ovens. If an electric oven is slow to reach the set temperature, the fan oven element has usually failed. The fan continues to circulate air, but the element itself stops generating heat.
Tumble dryers are useful in properties without much outdoor space to hang washing. When a dryer drum turns but the clothes stay cold, the heating element or the thermal overload cutout has tripped or failed. A blocked lint filter restricts airflow and causes the heater to overheat.
