Know the home, know the fault
Surrounded by woodland and agricultural fields on a peninsula between two rivers, homes here often have varying kitchen layouts. In older cottages linked to the area's silver mining and market gardening past, space can be tight, meaning fridge freezers are sometimes pushed firmly into alcoves or corners. When an appliance is boxed in without adequate ventilation, the compressor and condenser coils have to work much harder to dissipate heat. This lack of airflow can lead to cooling issues, especially for larger American-style models or integrated units fitted inside wooden cabinetry. A restricted airflow around the cabinet is a leading cause of cooling failures, where the fridge section becomes warm while the freezer still works, or the reverse happens. When the compressor overheats, the system struggles to maintain the correct temperatures. Another issue is frost and solid ice build-up inside the freezer compartment. This happens when a defrost heater fails or a blocked drain hole stops condensation from escaping, which eventually causes water leaks inside the fridge or out onto the kitchen floor. You might also notice noisy running, which usually points to a failing evaporator fan motor struggling against ice blockages, or faulty electronic controls failing to regulate the defrost cycle correctly. The journey involves navigating narrow country lanes and a narrow bridge to get onto the peninsula. Once we arrive at your property, perhaps down near the railway station, we start by checking the appliance over. We look at the thermostat sensors, inspect the door seals for air leaks, and test the defrost components to find out why the temperatures are wrong or why water is pooling.

Call 01752 922765Water leaking onto the floor usually means the defrost drain is blocked. When the appliance goes through its automatic defrost cycle, the melted frost needs a clear path to the evaporation tray above the compressor. If debris or ice blocks this tube, the water overflows inside the cabinet and eventually leaks out of the bottom door seal.
Noisy running is normally caused by a failing fan motor or the compressor itself. If ice builds up behind the rear plastic panel in the freezer, the evaporator fan blades can start hitting the frost, creating a loud buzzing or grinding noise. A faulty compressor might also vibrate excessively against the appliance chassis.
This happens when the cold air from the freezer cannot circulate up into the fridge section. It is usually caused by a broken evaporator fan, a frozen damper door, or a failure in the defrost system. Without that fan pushing the chilled air upwards, the fridge compartment will gradually become warm and spoil your food.
