Know the home, know the fault
The settlement of Gunnislake grew rapidly during the nineteenth century due to a dramatic increase in mining and industrial activity. Today, the area is mainly residential, with housing sitting alongside a small handful of businesses ranging from pubs to garages and small shops. The village is located in the Tamar Valley designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. In older nineteenth-century properties, kitchens might have uneven floors. If a tall fridge freezer is not levelled using its adjustable front feet, the heavy doors might not close flush. A poor seal lets ambient air inside, forcing the cooling system to run longer. When ambient air enters the appliance, frost and ice build up on the evaporator coils or around the freezer drawers. This ice restricts the internal airflow between the two compartments. A fridge running warm while the freezer still works, or the reverse, happens when the fan or damper flap fails to move cold air correctly. Water leaks inside the fridge or pooling onto the floor usually point to a blocked defrost drain at the back of the cabinet. Noisy running can indicate a failing fan motor struggling against an ice blockage. Faulty controls might stop the compressor from turning on at all. On a visit near King George's Field, we look at the thermostat, the defrost heater and the cooling circuit to find out why one side or both have stopped working properly. We check the door seals, clear blocked condensation drains and test the internal fans to see if cold air is circulating.

Call 01752 922765Water inside the fridge usually means the defrost drain is blocked. Moisture from the cooling process runs down the back wall into a small hole, which leads to a drip tray above the compressor. If crumbs or food packaging block this hole, the water overflows into the cabin and eventually leaks onto the floor.
A loud buzzing or vibrating noise can happen if the appliance is not sitting level on the floor. Scraping or grinding sounds usually come from the internal evaporator fan. If ice builds up behind the rear plastic panel, the fan blades will hit the ice as they spin. A failing compressor can also cause a loud rattling noise.
Most fridge freezers generate all their cold air in the freezer section. A fan then blows a portion of this air up into the fridge. If the fan motor fails, or if a heavy build-up of ice blocks the air channel between the two compartments, the fridge will stay warm while the freezer continues to work.
