Know the home, know the fault
Properties around the River Tavy and the nearby high ground of Dartmoor range from mid-nineteenth-century miners' houses to modern developments built for commuters working in Plymouth. The area also features distinctive Bedford style architecture and serves as a base for visitors exploring West Devon. In older cottages or historic buildings, kitchen layouts can dictate the choice of refrigeration, with integrated fridge freezers chosen to blend behind cabinet doors. Meanwhile, larger modern homes or properties catering to the tourist trade might have the space for wide American-style models. When a fridge freezer develops a fault, it is usually down to airflow, temperature regulation or defrost systems. A situation where the freezer remains cold but the fridge section grows warm points to a failure in the fan that moves chilled air between the compartments, or a blocked defrost drain causing ice to restrict the vents. Frost and ice build-up inside the cabinet happens when a defrost heater or sensor stops working, forcing the compressor to run continuously. Water pooling inside the fridge or leaking onto the floor is another issue, usually caused by a blocked condensation channel. You might also notice noisy running from a failing compressor or faulty electronic controls that prevent the appliance from maintaining the correct temperature. When visiting homes near Whitchurch Down or other parts of the settlement, we look at the specific symptoms your appliance is showing. We check the compressor, test the defrost heaters and inspect the control boards on both freestanding and integrated units. We repair electric appliances, including fridge freezers, but we do not work on gas cookers or any gas appliance.

Call 01752 922765This happens when the cold air generated in the freezer cannot circulate into the fridge compartment. It is usually caused by a faulty evaporator fan motor or a heavy build-up of ice blocking the air vents. A failed defrost heater or sensor will allow this ice to form, restricting the airflow completely.
Water on the floor usually comes from a blocked or frozen defrost drain. During a normal defrost cycle, melted ice travels down a tube into a pan near the compressor, where it evaporates. If that tube gets clogged with food debris or freezes over, the water overflows inside the cabinet and eventually leaks out.
Thick ice inside a frost-free freezer points to a failure in the automatic defrost system. The defrost timer, control board, or the heater itself might have stopped working. When these components fail, the appliance cannot melt away the natural condensation that turns to frost, leading to a solid layer of ice over the evaporator coils.
