Homes in Modbury, and what they need

About Modbury

The place and its homes

Modbury sits on the A379 road, which links it to Plymouth and Kingsbridge. It is home to a population of about 2,008 people. The impact of the mechanisation of the wool industry had a dramatic effect on the economic prosperity and population of the town from the mid-1820s. Later, the railway line bypassed the area, contributing still further to this decline. Despite this, it remained an important market town until as late as 1944 when the cattle market ceased.

In homes like these

What that means for your appliances

Homes built during earlier agricultural periods were not designed with modern domestic appliances in mind. Fitting a modern washing machine, washer dryer or dishwasher into an older property can mean routing fill and drain hoses through tight spaces. If a hose gets kinked behind a cabinet, a washing machine will stop mid-cycle and display a fill or drain error. Refrigeration appliances also need space to breathe. A fridge freezer or wine cooler pushed too tightly into an alcove will struggle to dissipate heat from its condenser coils, forcing the compressor to run longer and work harder to maintain the set temperature.

02What we look out for

What these homes mean for your appliances

01

Washing machine fill and drain faults

Older properties sometimes have washing machines installed in utility spaces with extended pipework. If a drain hose is too long or sits lower than the waste pipe, the machine can siphon water back into the drum. A kinked fill hose will restrict water flow and trigger an error code.

02

Electric oven heating element failures

When an electric oven blows cold air while the thermostat light is on, the fan element has usually failed. The element wire degrades over time and eventually snaps, breaking the electrical circuit. Replacing the element restores the heat, allowing the appliance to bake and roast normally again.

03

Fridge freezer temperature and cooling problems

A fridge freezer needs adequate airflow around its exterior to work efficiently. When pushed hard against a wall, the condenser coils cannot release heat. The compressor then runs continuously to keep the interior cold, which increases energy use and can lead to premature failure of the cooling system.

Yes, we travel to homes in the main town and surrounding places like Whympston and Yarnacombe.

No, we do not work on gas cookers, gas hobs or any gas appliance. We only repair electric cooking appliances. This includes electric ovens, electric cookers, electric range cookers, electric hobs and induction hobs. If you have a dual-fuel cooker, we cannot repair the gas burners.

Standing water usually points to a blockage in the drain system. Food debris can clog the sump filter, or the drain pump might be jammed by a piece of broken glass. In older kitchens where hoses are routed through tight cabinets, a crushed drain hose will also prevent emptying.

A condenser tumble dryer needs a clean heat exchanger to extract moisture from the warm air. If the condenser is blocked with lint, the drying process slows down significantly. Restricted airflow from a clogged door filter will also cause the machine to overheat and trip its safety thermostat.
