Know the home, know the fault

The settlement saw further decline when the railway network bypassed it entirely. Instead, it maintained a strong rural and agricultural focus, with a cattle market operating until the mid-twentieth century. In properties with older or less conventional layouts, a freestanding electric cooker is a practical choice. Having the oven, grill and hob in one unit means there is no need to alter kitchen worktops or cabinets for built-in appliances. When a freestanding cooker develops a fault, it can affect just one function or the whole appliance. A fan oven that blows cold air usually has a failed heating element, while a grill that refuses to warm up might have a damaged element or a faulty regulator switch. On the top section, solid hotplates or radiant rings can stop heating if their internal wiring degrades. Sometimes, using the cooker causes the household electrics to trip. This happens when moisture gets into a heating element or when insulation around a wire breaks down, creating a short circuit to earth. Mechanical parts also wear out, leading to loose control knobs, faulty selector switches or oven doors that fail to close properly because of weak hinges. We visit homes throughout the area, including places like Whympston. During a visit, we look at oven and grill heating faults, hob rings or zones not heating, cookers that trip the electrics, and issues with controls, switches and doors. We only work on electric and induction cooking appliances, so we do not repair gas cookers or gas hobs.

This usually happens because a heating element has developed an earth fault. As elements age, their outer casing can split, allowing moisture to reach the internal wiring. When electricity flows through the compromised element, it shorts to the metal casing, causing your consumer unit to trip. The faulty element needs replacing.

A solid hotplate relies on an internal resistance wire to generate heat. Over time, this wire can burn out or break, leaving the plate completely cold. Alternatively, the issue might be a faulty energy regulator switch behind the control knob, which stops the electrical current from reaching the hotplate wiring.

If the fan is spinning and the indicator light is on but there is no heat, the circular fan element has likely failed. The element wire breaks inside its casing, breaking the electrical circuit. The oven will still sound like it is working, but it requires a replacement heating element.
