Know the home, know the fault

Modbury has a strong rural history, having kept an active cattle market until the mid-twentieth century. Properties in a rural setting rely heavily on their cooking appliances, particularly when preparing meals for a household. An electric or induction hob is central to a functioning kitchen, but a failure can disrupt meal preparation entirely. When a hob stops working, the symptoms vary depending on whether it is a ceramic, solid plate or induction model. Touch controls might stop responding to inputs, or the unit could display error codes and switch itself off mid-cycle. Sometimes, individual zones or rings simply will not heat up when turned on. Another issue is a hob that trips the electrics as soon as power is applied. These faults can stem from failed heating elements, faulty control boards, damaged wiring or blown thermal limiters. Induction models rely on complex electronics to generate a magnetic field, meaning a failure there is usually related to the internal circuit boards rather than a traditional heating element. We travel along the A379, which links the settlement to Plymouth and Kingsbridge, to repair appliances in customers' homes. Whether a house is near the Church of St George or further out, we look at zones that will not heat, unresponsive touch controls, error codes, units that switch off and hobs that trip the electrics. Please note that our cooking appliance repairs are electric and induction only, so we do not work on gas hobs or any gas appliance.

An induction hob uses internal sensors to monitor temperatures and electrical currents. If it detects an anomaly, such as an overheating component or a communication failure within the circuit boards, it will shut down and display a code to prevent further damage. The exact meaning depends on the manufacturer, but it usually points to a failing electronic module.

When a single zone on a ceramic hob fails to heat, the most likely cause is a broken heating element beneath the glass. The element wire can degrade and snap over time. Alternatively, the energy regulator or the touch control board that sends power to that specific ring might have failed, preventing any electricity from reaching the element.

A hob will trip the electrics if there is a short circuit or an earth fault. This happens when an internal wire chafes against the metal casing, or when moisture gets into the terminal block. A damaged heating element can also short out to earth when it gets hot. We can inspect the wiring to locate the electrical fault.
