Know the home, know the fault

Modbury has a strong rural background, having hosted a cattle market until the mid-twentieth century. In rural communities with older properties, kitchens are sometimes adapted to fit larger appliances like electric range cookers. These multi-cavity units provide extensive cooking space, making them a focal point for preparing large meals, but their size and complexity mean they require specific components when parts fail. When an electric range cooker develops a fault, it can disrupt the entire kitchen routine. A main or secondary oven that stops heating usually points to a failed fan element or a faulty thermostat. Grill and hob faults also occur, where ceramic or induction zones might stop responding to the dials, or a grill element burns out. Because these large appliances draw a significant amount of power, a degraded heating element or compromised wiring can cause the cooker to trip the electrics. Control boards and cooling fans are also essential for keeping the various compartments operating at the correct temperatures, and these degrade over time through normal use. Whether a cooker is situated near the Church of St George or further out, we repair appliances directly in the home. During a visit, we look at the heating elements, thermostats, control switches and fans to find the source of the problem. We work exclusively on electric and induction models, meaning we do not repair gas cookers or any gas appliances.

When a fan oven blows cold air but the indicator lights remain on, the circular heating element surrounding the fan has usually failed. The fan continues to circulate air, but without a working element, no heat is generated. We test the element and the associated thermostats to confirm the fault.

Tripping electrics are usually caused by an electrical short or an earth leak within the appliance. This happens when a heating element splits or degrades, allowing moisture to penetrate the insulation. Faulty wiring or a damaged selector switch can also cause this. We inspect the internal components to locate the short.

An induction zone might stop heating if the pan is not compatible or if the internal inverter board has failed. Sometimes, the touch controls or rotary dials lose communication with the hob generators. We examine the hob components and control boards to find out why the cooking zones are not responding.
