Know the home, know the fault
Properties situated beside the Devon Expressway at the edge of the Dartmoor National Park range from late eighteenth to early twentieth-century dwellings in the centre to 1920s housing towards the south west and north west. The medieval street layout is still visible today, particularly in Fore Street, where older properties were largely rebuilt by the seventeenth century. In these varied homes, freezers are relied upon for long-term food storage. Chest freezers might be kept in outbuildings or utility spaces, while upright models are usually integrated into the main kitchen. Wherever a freezer is placed, it needs adequate airflow around the condenser coils at the back to dissipate heat effectively. When a freezer is not cold enough, the compressor may run constantly to try and reach the set temperature, which can trigger temperature alarms. Heavy ice build-up is another fault that affects upright and chest freezers alike. This ice can cause drawers to stick and reduces the available storage space. Ice accumulation is sometimes caused by door seal faults, where warm air enters the cabinet and condenses into frost. Defrost heaters, timers or thermostats can also fail, preventing the appliance from clearing its own evaporator coils. If the coils become completely blocked with ice, cold air cannot circulate properly, leading to a rise in internal temperature. During a visit, we look at upright and chest freezers that are not freezing or are icing up. We investigate the root cause of heavy ice build-up and drawers that stick, as well as checking for door seal faults. If your appliance has temperature alarms sounding or is running constantly, we inspect the internal components to find the source of the problem. We also repair washing machines, dishwashers, electric ovens and other domestic appliances, though we do not work on gas appliances.

Call 01752 922765Heavy ice build-up usually happens when warm air enters the cabinet. This is sometimes caused by door seal faults that let room air seep inside, where it condenses and freezes. In frost-free models, a failed defrost heater, timer or sensor will stop the appliance from melting away normal frost accumulation.
Constant running indicates the appliance is struggling to reach its target temperature. This can happen if the condenser coils on the outside are covered in thick dust, restricting heat transfer. It might also point to a failing compressor, a faulty thermostat, or a slow refrigerant leak reducing the cooling capacity.
Temperature alarms sound when the internal cabinet gets too warm. This can occur if the door has been left ajar, or if heavy ice build-up is blocking the internal fan from circulating cold air. It can also be a sign that the compressor or start relay has failed completely.
