Know the home, know the fault

Properties in the centre of this Devon town consist mostly of late eighteenth to early twentieth-century buildings, many retaining their original features alongside a medieval street layout. Further out, the area expanded to the south west and north west during the 1920s with a large local authority housing project. In older dwellings with traditional floor plans, finding room for laundry equipment sometimes means stacking a tumble dryer above a washing machine or placing it in a utility space. Condenser models are particularly useful in historic homes where drilling a vent hole through thick original walls is not practical. Tumble dryers rely on a few key components that can fail over time. A machine that runs but produces no heat usually has a tripped safety thermostat or a broken heating element. When a drum refuses to turn while the motor hums, the drive belt has likely snapped or the motor capacitor has failed. Condenser dryers depend on clear airflow and proper drainage, so a blocked fluff filter or a full water container will cause the machine to stop mid-cycle or refuse to start altogether. Noisy running generally points to worn drum bearings, damaged support rollers, or a failing tensioner pulley. We travel up the Devon Expressway to repair appliances in customers' homes across Buckfastleigh and nearby places such as Scorriton. During a visit, we look at dryers that will not heat, turn, or finish a cycle. We investigate condenser and water container faults, trace the mechanical source of noisy running, and diagnose machines that stop mid-cycle or simply will not start. We also repair washing machines, dishwashers, fridges, freezers, and electric ovens, though we do not work on gas appliances.

A dryer that tumbles without heating usually has a problem with its heating element or a tripped safety thermostat. Poor airflow from a blocked lint filter can cause the thermostat to trip to prevent overheating. We can test the element and thermostats to find out which part has failed.

If you can hear the motor running but the drum remains still, the drive belt has almost certainly snapped. If the machine just hums and does not turn, the motor start capacitor might have failed. Both faults require opening the appliance to inspect the drive system and replace the broken components.

Condenser dryers will halt a cycle if the water container is full or if the pump that moves water to the container is blocked. A clogged condenser unit or fluff filter will also restrict airflow, causing the machine to overheat and stop. Keeping the filters clear helps maintain proper airflow.
