Know the home, know the fault

Properties situated beside the A38 on the edge of Dartmoor National Park vary from late eighteenth-century dwellings in the centre to a large building programme of local authority housing added to the southwest and northwest during the 1920s. While the medieval street layout remains visible today, particularly around Fore Street, the kitchens inside these private homes rely on modern cooking appliances. Built-in electric and induction hobs are fitted into worktops across these different property ages, providing a flat cooking surface that requires adequate ventilation underneath to keep internal electronics cool. When a ceramic or induction hob stops working, the issue is usually found beneath the glass surface. Touch controls that do not respond can be caused by a faulty user interface board or moisture trapped under the glass. If zones or rings will not heat, the problem might be a failed heating element on a standard electric model or a damaged generator module on an induction unit. Error codes and hobs that switch off mid-cycle point to overheating components, communication errors between internal circuit boards, or a failure in the cooling fan that protects the electronics. Hobs that trip the electrics indicate a short circuit, which can happen if liquid boils over and reaches the wiring. We travel out to the surrounding areas, including Scorriton, to repair cooking appliances directly in customers' homes. During a visit, we dismantle the unit to look at zones that fail to heat, unresponsive touch controls, and hobs displaying error codes or tripping the household electrics. Our repair service is strictly for electric and induction models, as we do not work on gas hobs or any gas appliance.

An induction hob will switch off if the internal temperature gets too high. This happens when the cooling fan underneath the unit fails or if the ventilation space inside the cabinet is blocked. It can also shut down if a sensor detects that a pan has boiled dry, or if there is a fault on the main power board.

A ceramic zone that will not heat usually has a broken radiant heating element under the glass. The element wire can snap, breaking the electrical circuit. Alternatively, the energy regulator or the touch control board that sends power to that specific ring might have failed. We look at the wiring and components to find the break.

Unresponsive touch controls are sometimes caused by liquid spilling onto the glass, which confuses the sensors. If drying the surface does not help, the user interface board beneath the glass may have developed a fault. A loose wiring connection between the control board and the main power module can also stop the buttons from working.
