Homes in Totnes

Know the home, know the fault

The town of Totnes is known for having a high number of listed buildings per person, with its historic wealth visible in the merchants' houses built during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Located right next to the South Devon National Landscape at the top of the River Dart estuary, the area features many older properties. Historic homes sometimes have uneven floors or limited kitchen space, which can dictate where an upright or chest freezer is placed. If an appliance is kept in an unheated utility area or an older outbuilding, ambient temperature fluctuations can affect how the compressor cycles and whether the thermostat reads the internal climate correctly. When an upright or chest freezer stops maintaining a low temperature, the issue might be a failing compressor relay, a faulty thermostat, or a blocked defrost drain. Heavy ice build-up causes drawers to stick and reduces the available storage space. This icing up happens if the magnetic door seal is split or flattened, letting warm room air inside, or if the automatic defrost heater stops working. A constant running motor or a sounding temperature alarm indicates the appliance is struggling to remove heat from the cabinet, which can lead to food thawing if the underlying fault is left unresolved. During a visit, we look at freezers that are not cold enough or are icing up. We check for door seal faults, investigate temperature alarms, and find the cause of heavy ice build-up or constant running. All Appliance Care repairs a range of white goods in the home, including fridges and wine coolers, though we do not work on gas appliances.

Thick ice builds up when warm air enters the cabinet or the defrost system fails. A damaged door seal allows room air to seep inside, where the moisture freezes onto the internal walls. Alternatively, a broken defrost heater or sensor will prevent the appliance from melting away normal frost, leading to heavy ice build-up that makes drawers stick.

A temperature alarm sounds when the internal climate rises above a safe freezing level. This happens if the compressor is failing, the thermostat is faulty, or the lid has been left slightly open. A blocked air vent or a heavy build-up of frost can also restrict cold air circulation, causing the appliance to struggle and trigger the warning light or alarm.

A freezer motor runs constantly when the appliance cannot reach its target temperature. This might be due to a split door seal letting cold air escape, or a build-up of dust on the condenser coils at the back. A failing compressor or a faulty thermostat can also cause the motor to run without pausing, which increases energy use.
