Know the home, know the fault

Properties beside the Devon Expressway on the edge of the Dartmoor National Park vary in age. The centre contains a medieval street layout, visible in Fore Street, though most buildings were rebuilt by the seventeenth century. Today, the central area consists largely of late eighteenth to early twentieth-century private dwellings that retain their original character. In the 1920s, a local authority housing programme extended residential areas to the southwest and northwest. In older properties with original features, kitchen space can be restricted, leading residents to choose built-in or combination microwaves to save worktop room. These integrated models provide baking and grilling functions, making them a practical choice for homes where a full-sized electric cooker might be difficult to accommodate. When a combination or built-in microwave stops working, the issue is tied to a specific internal component. A microwave that runs but fails to heat the food points to a failed magnetron, a blown high-voltage diode, or a faulty capacitor. If the glass turntable will not rotate, the food cooks unevenly. This happens when the small synchronous motor under the cavity floor burns out, or if the plastic drive coupler snaps. Door latch and switch faults prevent the appliance from starting. The door contains microswitches acting as a safety interlock. If the plastic hooks fail to engage these switches properly, the control board will not allow the heating cycle to begin. When visiting homes in Buckfastleigh or nearby places like Scorriton, we look at built-in and combination microwaves that will not heat or turn. We inspect microwaves that run but do not heat, turntables that will not turn, door latch and switch faults, and unresponsive controls or displays. We repair these appliances directly in your home. We only work on electric and induction cooking appliances and do not repair gas cookers, gas hobs, or any gas appliance.

When a microwave sounds like it is working but the food remains cold, the fault lies within the high-voltage circuit. The magnetron, which generates the microwave energy, may have failed. Alternatively, a blown high-voltage diode or a faulty capacitor will prevent the magnetron from receiving the power it needs to operate.

The turntable is driven by a small synchronous motor located underneath the floor of the microwave cavity. If this motor burns out, the glass plate will not turn, resulting in unevenly cooked food. Sometimes, the plastic drive coupler that connects the motor shaft to the turntable tray can snap or strip its teeth.

This happens when there is a fault with the door latch mechanism. The door features small plastic hooks that engage with safety microswitches inside the cabinet. If a hook breaks or a microswitch fails, the control board registers the door as open and will not allow the heating cycle to begin for safety reasons.
