Know the home, know the fault
The town centre here retains its medieval street layout and consists mostly of late eighteenth to early twentieth-century private dwellings alongside commercial properties. In the 1920s, the area expanded to the southwest and northwest with a large local authority housing project. Older properties with original features sometimes have smaller or unevenly shaped kitchens, which can make fitting and venting a modern fridge tricky. If a fridge is pushed too tightly against a wall or into a narrow alcove, the compressor and condenser coils struggle to release heat. This lack of airflow forces the appliance to work harder to maintain its internal temperature. When a fridge cannot dissipate heat effectively, the compressor runs constantly, which can lead to clicking sounds or new mechanical noises as the components strain. Another issue is ice building up on the back wall, which happens when warm air enters the cabinet. This might be due to faulty door seals that no longer grip correctly, or a failing thermostat that misreads the internal climate. When the defrost cycle cannot keep up, ice forms, and you might eventually notice water pooling inside the cabinet or leaking onto the floor. Fridges that are warm or not cooling evenly also point to airflow problems inside the unit, sometimes caused by a blocked drain hole or a failing fan. We travel up the Devon Expressway to repair domestic appliances in customers' homes, heading out to places like Scorriton and the surrounding rural areas. During a visit, we look at the specific symptoms your fridge is showing. We check for faulty lights, test the thermostats, and inspect the door seals for wear. We also investigate the source of any water pooling or ice build-up, and track down the cause of constant running or clicking noises.

Call 01752 922765Water pooling inside the cabinet usually points to a blocked defrost drain. When the fridge goes through its normal defrost cycle, the melted water needs a clear path to the drip tray above the compressor. If crumbs or food packaging block this drain hole, the water has nowhere to go and spills out onto the floor of the fridge.
A compressor that runs constantly and makes clicking noises is struggling to reach the set temperature. This happens if the condenser coils are covered in dust, restricting airflow, or if a faulty thermostat is giving incorrect readings. The clicking sound is the start relay attempting to engage the compressor motor repeatedly because it is overheating or failing.
Ice building up on the back wall happens when warm, moist air enters the fridge and freezes. Worn or split door seals are a primary cause, as they let room air seep in continuously. It can also happen if the internal temperature is set too low, or if a faulty sensor stops the automatic defrost cycle from working.
