Homes in Buckfastleigh

Know the home, know the fault

Properties in Buckfastleigh range from late eighteenth to early twentieth-century buildings in the centre, where the medieval street layout remains visible around Fore Street, to local authority housing built during the 1920s in the southwest and northwest. The area is also a centre of tourism, meaning some properties operate as holiday lets alongside private homes. In older dwellings with original features, kitchens might be fitted into spaces that were not originally designed for modern built-in appliances. When an electric oven is installed in a restricted space, poor ventilation can cause the cooling fan to work harder, potentially leading to premature component failure. When an electric oven stops heating but the fan still runs and the indicator light is on, the fan oven element has usually failed. This happens because the internal wire degrades over time and eventually breaks. Uneven cooking is another issue, which can point to a faulty fan motor failing to circulate hot air, or a failing thermostat that cannot maintain the correct temperature. Ovens that trip the electrics usually have an earth fault, which is often traced to a split element casing or damaged wiring near the rear terminal block. Mechanical parts also degrade with use. Worn door hinges or a compressed door seal will let heat escape, forcing the appliance to run longer to reach the set temperature and sometimes melting adjacent control knobs. During a visit, we look at ovens that will not heat or only heat on some functions, uneven cooking, fan oven faults, and appliances that trip the electrics. We also inspect door hinges, seals and glass, alongside faulty thermostats, controls and clocks. All Appliance Care repairs electric and induction cooking appliances only, so we do not work on gas cookers, gas hobs or any gas appliance.

An electric oven that trips the electrics usually has an earth fault. This happens when the internal insulation of a heating element breaks down, allowing moisture to enter or the internal wire to touch the outer casing. It can also be caused by damaged wiring near the terminal block at the back of the appliance.

If the fan is spinning and the thermostat light is on but there is no heat, the circular fan element has likely failed. The internal resistance wire inside the element degrades with use and eventually snaps. When this circuit breaks, the element stops producing heat, leaving only the fan motor running.

A door that will not close tight is usually caused by worn hinges. The internal springs stretch over time, losing the tension needed to pull the door flush against the frame. A compressed or damaged rubber door seal can also prevent the door from seating correctly, allowing hot air to escape during cooking.
