Know the home, know the fault

Households with older teenagers attending the local secondary school and sixth form college use their kitchens heavily. Electric and induction hobs take a lot of punishment in busy kitchens, dealing with heavy pans and spills. Whether a kitchen has traditional electric rings or a flat ceramic surface, preparing meals for a full house puts stress on heating elements and control boards. When a hob stops working, the symptoms depend on the technology. On a standard ceramic or electric model, a zone that refuses to heat up might point to a burnt out element or a failed energy regulator. Induction hobs use magnetic fields to heat the pan directly, so a failure here often involves internal inverter boards or cooling fans. If an induction unit overheats, it will usually shut down and display an error code. Touch controls become unresponsive if moisture gets under the glass or if the user interface board develops a fault. Hobs tripping the electrics happen when a component shorts out to the earth. We do not work on gas hobs or gas cookers, focusing entirely on electric and induction models. We look at zones or rings that will not heat, test touch controls that do not respond, and investigate error codes or hobs that switch off unexpectedly. If the unit is tripping the electrics, we trace the wiring and test individual components to locate the short circuit.

An error code usually means the hob has detected an internal fault or an overheating issue. Induction models rely on cooling fans to keep the electronics at a safe temperature. If a fan fails or the ventilation is blocked, the control board will shut the appliance down to prevent damage. We can test the internal components to find the cause.

When a single zone on a ceramic hob fails to heat up, the most likely cause is a broken heating element under the glass. The element wire can burn out over time due to normal wear and tear. Alternatively, the energy regulator or the touch control board that sends power to that specific zone might have failed.

A hob will trip your household electrics if there is a short circuit or an earth leakage fault. This happens when an electrical component, such as a heating element or a damaged wire, makes contact with the metal casing. Moisture getting into the internal wiring from a spill on the glass surface can also cause the circuit breaker to trip.
