Know the home, know the fault

Kingsteignton has grown over the past two centuries alongside the local clay mining industry. Modern built-in and combination microwaves are fitted across these different property types, often integrated into fitted kitchens to save counter space. Families with older teenagers attending the secondary school and sixth form college rely heavily on these appliances for heating meals at different times of the day. When a built-in unit stops working, it is not as simple as swapping a freestanding model, and a repair visit is needed to get the kitchen functioning normally again. A combination microwave might appear to be running normally, with the internal light on and the fan sounding, but the food remains cold. This failure to heat is a fault within the high-voltage components, such as the magnetron, capacitor, or diode. Another issue is a turntable that refuses to rotate, which leads to unevenly heated food. This is usually caused by a failed synchronous motor under the cavity floor or a broken drive coupling. Door latches and microswitches are also points of failure; if the safety switches do not register that the door is securely closed, the control board will prevent the appliance from starting. Display panels can become unresponsive or show error codes, leaving the unit completely unusable. During a visit, we look at built-in and combination models to diagnose why they will not heat or turn. We dismantle the casing to inspect the internal components, checking the door latch mechanisms, safety switches, and the main control boards. We focus entirely on electric appliances and do not work on gas cookers, gas hobs, or any gas appliance.

When a microwave sounds like it is running but the food stays cold, the fault is usually in the high-voltage circuit. The magnetron, which generates the microwave energy, might have failed. Alternatively, a faulty high-voltage capacitor or diode can prevent the magnetron from receiving the correct power to operate.

A turntable that will not turn is typically caused by a broken synchronous motor located underneath the cavity floor. Sometimes, the plastic drive coupling that connects the motor to the glass tray is cracked or stripped. Spills that seep under the turntable can also jam the rotating ring mechanism.

If the display is blank and the appliance will not start, the internal main fuse may have blown. This fuse is designed to protect the microwave if a component draws too much current. Faulty door microswitches can also cut power to the controls if they fail to register the door closing.
