Know the home, know the fault

Properties located near the head of the Teign Estuary range from working farmhouses like Whiteway Barton to housing developments such as the extension of Calvados Park. In busy family homes, perhaps with older teenage students attending Teign School, a freestanding electric cooker sees heavy daily use. Preparing multiple meals puts wear on the oven elements, grill and hob rings. Whether the kitchen is in a historic rural property or a newer build, these appliances eventually develop faults through standard mechanical and electrical fatigue.

Why electric cookers go wrong

What we look for

A freestanding electric cooker combines several cooking methods in one unit, meaning a fault might isolate just one function or stop the whole appliance from working. Solid plate or ceramic hob zones can fail to heat up if the element burns out or the energy regulator switch behind the control knob breaks. Inside the main cavity, a fan oven element might split, which leaves the fan blowing cold air. Grill elements can also warp and fail over time. When an internal component shorts out, it will trip the household electrics. Door hinges can weaken, preventing the oven from closing tightly and letting heat escape into the room.

This usually happens when an electrical component inside the cooker develops a fault and shorts out to the earth. The most likely cause is a split or damaged heating element in the oven, grill, or on the hob. Faulty switches, damaged internal wiring, or a failing terminal block at the back of the appliance can also cause the household breakers to trip.

If the fan is spinning and the indicator light is on but there is no heat, the fan oven element has likely failed. These circular elements sit at the back of the cavity and eventually burn out through normal use. The element will need to be tested with a multimeter and replaced to restore the heating function.

A solid hotplate will stop working if the internal element wire breaks or burns out. Alternatively, the energy regulator switch located behind the control knob may have failed, preventing power from reaching the plate. We can test both the switch and the hotplate to find out which part has broken and needs to be replaced.
