Homes in Totnes

Know the home, know the fault

Properties in Totnes, situated at the head of the River Dart estuary, include many sixteenth and seventeenth-century merchants' houses. The town is understood to have more listed buildings per person than anywhere else. Across the wider domestic appliance industry, older historic homes feature highly varied kitchen spaces. When fitting modern ceramic or induction hobs into older properties, ventilation and electrical supplies must be carefully managed. A poorly ventilated induction unit in a compact period kitchen can overheat its internal boards, while older wiring setups might struggle if a high-wattage electric hob is installed without dedicated circuits. Induction and electric hobs rely on distinct components that fail in specific ways. On a standard ceramic model, a zone that refuses to heat points to a broken heating element or a faulty energy regulator. Induction hobs operate differently, using electromagnetic coils beneath the glass. If an induction zone stops working or flashes an error code, the issue is a failed inverter board or a blown insulated-gate bipolar transistor. Touch controls that do not respond happen on either type, caused by moisture getting under the glass or a failing user interface module. When a hob trips the electrics, it is due to a dead short in a heating ring or a damaged terminal block. Once at your property, we look at zones or rings that will not heat, touch controls that do not respond, error codes, hobs that switch off unexpectedly, and units that trip the electrics. All Appliance Care works on electric and induction cooking appliances, though we do not repair gas cookers, gas hobs or any gas appliance.

Error codes on an induction hob indicate a specific component failure detected by the main control board. This happens when internal cooling fans fail, causing the inverter boards to overheat, or if there is a communication error between the touch interface and the power modules. We look at these faults to identify the broken part.

When a ceramic heating zone refuses to turn down and remains on maximum heat, the energy regulator or the control board relay has failed in the closed position. This means power flows continuously to the element regardless of the dial setting. The faulty component requires replacement to restore normal temperature control.

An electric hob trips the household electrics when there is a dead short to earth. This is caused by a split or degraded heating element, moisture ingress around the terminal block, or melted wiring insulation inside the appliance casing. We inspect the internal wiring and elements to locate the source of the short.
