Know the home, know the fault

Okehampton sits right on the northern boundary of Dartmoor, with a history rooted in the medieval wool trade. In older houses, kitchen layouts might dictate a traditional electric ceramic hob fitted into a compact worktop, while modern builds often feature sleek induction models designed for energy efficiency. Whatever the age of the property, a broken cooking appliance causes significant disruption to daily meal preparation. When an electric or induction hob fails, the symptoms vary depending on the technology. Ceramic hobs rely on radiant heating elements under the glass, which can burn out over time, leaving a zone or ring that will not heat up. Induction models use magnetic coils and complex electronics to heat pans directly. If an induction hob switches off unexpectedly or displays error codes, the issue is usually related to the internal cooling fans or the main control board. Touch controls that do not respond can affect both types, sometimes caused by moisture ingress or a failed user interface module. Another issue is a hob that trips the electrics, which points to a dead short in the wiring or a faulty heating element. During a visit, we dismantle the appliance in your kitchen to test the internal components. We check the incoming power supply, test individual heating zones for continuity, and inspect the electronic modules for signs of component failure. Please note that we only repair electric and induction models; we do not work on gas hobs or any gas appliances.

Induction hobs generate internal heat and rely on built-in cooling fans to protect their electronic components. If a fan fails or the ventilation under the worktop is restricted, the appliance will overheat and shut down as a safety measure. We can inspect the cooling system and replace faulty fans to restore normal operation.

A ceramic hob uses radiant heating elements positioned beneath the glass surface. Over time, the internal wire coil within the element can break or burn out, breaking the electrical circuit. When this happens, the specific zone will remain cold even when turned on. The solution involves fitting a replacement heating element for that ring.

An appliance that trips your electrics usually has a dead short to earth. In a hob, this is caused by a split in a heating element casing, a damaged terminal block, or liquid getting into the internal wiring. We dismantle the unit to trace the short circuit and replace the compromised part.
