Know the home, know the fault
Properties at the northern edge of Dartmoor range from older buildings dating back to the settlement's origins in the medieval wool trade, through to 21st-century housing developments on the eastern edge. With new homes also being built in the area, kitchens vary from compact traditional spaces to modern open-plan layouts. In older properties, an upright freezer might be tucked into a narrow utility area, while newer builds accommodate larger chest or tall freezers. Wherever the appliance is located, adequate airflow around the condenser coils is necessary to dissipate heat and keep the interior at the correct temperature. When a freezer struggles to maintain temperature, the compressor will run constantly, which sometimes triggers a temperature alarm. Heavy ice build-up is another fault that affects both chest and upright models. This ice can cause drawers to stick and reduces the available storage space. Ice accumulation is sometimes caused by a split or degraded door seal letting warm room air into the cabinet, where it condenses and freezes. Alternatively, a failure in the defrost heater, thermostat or timer will stop the appliance from clearing its own frost, leading to ice blocking the evaporator fan and preventing cold air from circulating properly. We visit homes across the area, including properties out towards Belstone, to repair upright and chest freezers that are not freezing or are icing up. During a visit, we look at freezers that are not cold enough, investigate heavy ice build-up and drawers that stick, and check the causes of temperature alarms and constant running. We also inspect door seal faults and test the internal defrost components.

Call 01752 922765Thick ice inside an upright freezer is usually caused by warm air entering the cabinet or a failure in the automatic defrost system. A damaged door seal will let room air in, which then freezes. If the seal is intact, the defrost heater or timer has likely failed.
A freezer runs constantly when it cannot reach its set temperature. This happens if the condenser coils are covered in dust, restricting heat transfer, or if the thermostat is faulty and not telling the compressor to stop. A degraded lid seal will also force the motor to work harder.
The temperature alarm sounds when the internal cabinet becomes too warm to store food safely. This increase in temperature can be triggered by a failing compressor, a blocked evaporator fan, or a faulty start relay. We investigate the cooling system to find out why the appliance is not cold enough.
