Know the home, know the fault
Properties in this part of Devon range from historic buildings dating back to the medieval wool industry through to twenty-first century residential building projects on the eastern side. With additional housing construction currently planned or underway in the vicinity, kitchen styles continue to vary. Whether a kitchen is in an older property near the northern boundary of Dartmoor or a newly built home, extractor hoods perform the same basic function of removing steam and cooking odours. In open-plan modern layouts, a working extractor is vital to stop grease settling on soft furnishings, while in older, smaller kitchens, it helps manage moisture build-up during cooking. When an extractor stops working properly, the issue is usually found in the motor, the control switches or the lighting circuit. A fan that has lost suction or refuses to run might have a burnt-out motor or a failed capacitor. If the hood becomes excessively noisy or starts vibrating, the fan blades could be unbalanced by heavy grease accumulation, or the motor bearings might be worn. Lights and switches can also fail due to heat and moisture exposure above the hob. Maintaining clean grease filters helps reduce the strain on the motor and keeps the airflow clear. During a cooker hood repair visit, we look at fans that will not run or have lost suction, noisy or vibrating motors, and lights or switches that have failed. Please note that while we repair electric cooking appliances, we do not work on gas cookers, gas hobs or any gas appliance.

Call 01752 922765A vibrating extractor hood is usually caused by an imbalance in the fan blades. Over time, heavy grease deposits can build up unevenly on the blades, causing them to wobble as they spin. Alternatively, the motor bearings might be worn out. We can inspect the motor and fan assembly to locate the source of the noise.
When the lights fail but the fan still runs, the issue could be blown bulbs, a faulty light switch or a damaged lamp holder. The wiring and switches sit directly above the cooking area, exposing them to rising heat and moisture. We test the lighting circuit to find out which component needs to be replaced.
Poor suction normally means the airflow is restricted or the motor is failing. Saturated grease filters are a major cause of reduced extraction, as they block the air from passing through. If the filters are clean, the motor capacitor might have failed, preventing the fan from spinning fast enough to draw air out of the kitchen.
