Know the home, know the fault

Properties around the northern edge of Dartmoor range from older buildings dating back to when the settlement grew on the medieval wool trade, through to twenty-first century housing developments on the eastern edge. With new homes also being built in the area, kitchens vary considerably in size and layout. A modern fitted kitchen might house a built-in single or double electric oven at eye level, while an older property could rely on a freestanding electric cooker slotted between existing cabinets. Whatever the setup, a broken cooking appliance disrupts daily routines. When an electric oven fails to heat, the issue is usually a blown heating element. A fan oven might still circulate air, but the food remains cold if the circular element surrounding the fan blade has failed. Uneven cooking can occur when a thermostat stops reading the internal temperature accurately, causing the appliance to overheat and burn meals or shut off too early. Sometimes, the main household electrics trip the moment the oven is switched on, which points to an earth leak from a degraded component. Physical wear also takes a toll, leaving door hinges unable to close fully or seals letting heat escape. We work exclusively on electric and induction cooking appliances, so we do not repair gas cookers or gas hobs. We travel out to homes across the vicinity, including nearby places like South Zeal, to diagnose and repair faults. During a visit, we look at ovens that will not heat or only heat on some functions, alongside those that trip the electrics. We also investigate faulty thermostats, controls and clocks, as well as replacing worn door hinges, seals and glass.

This usually happens because a heating element has developed an earth fault. As the element degrades, the internal insulation breaks down, allowing electrical current to leak to the metal casing. The household safety switches detect this leak and trip the power. We can test the components to identify which part is causing the electrical short.

A fan oven uses a circular heating element located directly behind the fan blade at the back of the cavity. If this element blows, the motor will continue to spin the fan and the indicator lights will stay on, but no heat is produced. Replacing the faulty element restores normal cooking functions.

Yes, we look at door hinges, seals and glass during our repair visits. Over time, the springs inside oven door hinges lose their tension, which prevents the door from closing tightly against the frame. This lets heat escape, causing uneven cooking and wasting electricity. Fitting new hinges allows the door to shut properly again.
