Homes in Okehampton

Know the home, know the fault

Properties around the northern edge of Dartmoor range from older buildings dating back to when Okehampton expanded on the medieval wool trade, through to twenty-first century housing developments on the eastern side. Additional residential construction is also underway in the vicinity. Freestanding electric cookers are fitted across these different property types, providing a single unit for the oven, grill and hob. In older properties where kitchen layouts might be constrained by original walls, a freestanding cooker slots into a standard gap between units. In newer builds, they remain a practical alternative to built-in appliances, offering a complete cooking station in one appliance.

Why electric cookers go wrong

What we look for

When a freestanding electric cooker develops a fault, it can affect just one function or the entire appliance. A fan oven that blows cold air while the indicator light remains on usually points to a failed heating element, whereas a grill that refuses to heat might have a damaged element or a faulty selector switch. On the top section, solid hotplates or ceramic radiant zones can stop working if the internal wiring degrades or the energy regulator fails. Sometimes, turning on a specific hob ring or the main oven will immediately trip the household electrics. This happens when an internal component develops an earth fault, causing the safety breakers in the consumer unit to activate. Door hinges can also wear down over time, preventing the oven from closing properly and letting heat escape.

When we visit

From your call to repaired

We repair electric cookers in homes across the area, including properties out towards South Zeal. A visit involves dismantling the relevant sections of the cooker to test the internal components. If a hob zone is unresponsive, the switches and wiring are checked for continuity. For heating issues in the main cavity, the elements, thermostats and thermal cut-outs are tested to find where the circuit is broken. We only work on electric and induction cooking appliances, so we do not repair gas cookers, gas hobs or any gas equipment.

This happens when an electrical component develops an earth fault. The safety breakers in your consumer unit detect the electrical leak and shut off the power. On a freestanding cooker, the fault could be in a hob element, the main oven fan element, or a degraded wire touching the metal casing.

If the fan is spinning and the thermostat light comes on but there is no heat, the circular fan element has likely failed. The element is a consumable part that degrades with use. A repair involves removing the back panel inside the oven cavity to disconnect and replace the broken element.

Yes, individual hob zones can be repaired independently of the oven and grill. A single unresponsive ring is usually caused by a burnt out element, a faulty energy regulator switch behind the control knob, or a break in the wiring connecting the switch to the hotplate. We test these parts to find the break.
