Homes in Okehampton

Know the home, know the fault

With new homes also being built in the area, kitchens vary from older, compact spaces to modern, open-plan layouts. In older properties, a freestanding fridge might be tucked into a tight corner, which can restrict airflow around the condenser coils. Modern developments tend to feature integrated appliances, where the fridge is hidden behind a cabinet door, requiring careful ventilation through the plinth to stop the compressor from overheating. When a fridge struggles to maintain temperature, the cause is usually mechanical or electrical. A unit that feels too warm or fails to cool evenly might have a failing thermostat or a blocked defrost drain. If water starts pooling inside the cabinet or leaking onto the floor, the condensation channel is likely clogged. Ice building up on the back wall points to a faulty door seal letting warm air in, or an issue with the automatic defrost system. A fridge that runs constantly, clicks, or makes new noises could be dealing with a struggling compressor or a worn evaporator fan motor. Travelling out to places like South Zeal, we look at faulty lights, broken thermostats, and torn door seals. We check units that are warm, not cooling evenly, or suffering from water pooling inside or on the floor. Ice building up on the back wall and constant running, clicking or new noises are also faults we investigate. Our repairs cover electric appliances only, and we do not work on gas cookers or any gas equipment.

Water pooling inside the fridge usually means the condensation drain hole is blocked. During normal operation, moisture drips down the back wall and exits through a small channel. If food particles or debris clog this drain, the water has nowhere to go and spills into the cabinet or onto the floor.

A fridge compressor will run continuously if the appliance is struggling to reach the set temperature. This can happen if the door seal is torn, allowing warm room air to enter. It might also indicate dirty condenser coils at the back, or a failing thermostat that cannot detect when the cabinet is cold enough.

Ice builds up when warm air enters the fridge and condenses on the coldest surface. A damaged or loose door seal is a frequent cause of this issue. Alternatively, the automatic defrost system might be failing, preventing the appliance from melting away the normal frost that accumulates on the evaporator plate during cooling cycles.
