Know the home, know the fault
Properties at the northern edge of Dartmoor range from older buildings dating back to when the settlement expanded on the medieval wool trade, through to twenty-first century housing developments on the eastern edge. With new homes also being built in the area, domestic layouts vary considerably. In older properties, utility space can be restricted, meaning tumble dryers are sometimes installed in tight alcoves or under stairs. Newer builds might have dedicated utility rooms, allowing for better ventilation around the machine. Wherever a dryer is situated, adequate airflow is necessary to prevent it from overheating and to allow moisture to escape efficiently. When a dryer runs but does not heat, the heating element or the thermal overload cut-out has usually failed. A drum that will not turn while the motor can still be heard running points to a snapped drive belt, or sometimes a worn tension pulley. If a machine stops mid-cycle or will not start at all, the door catch mechanism or the main control board might be at fault. Condenser models rely on a heat exchanger to remove moisture, and if the water container fills up but the pump fails to move the water, the cycle will halt. Noisy running is another issue, which typically indicates worn support rollers or degraded drum bearings. We travel up to repair appliances in customers' homes, navigating routes that also lead towards the substantial British Army training facility on the moor, known as Okehampton Camp. During a visit, we look at dryers that will not heat, turn or finish a cycle. We also investigate machines that stop mid-cycle, will not start, have condenser and water container faults, or suffer from noisy running. While we repair electric appliances, we do not work on gas cookers, gas hobs or any gas appliance.

Call 01752 922765A machine that turns normally without heating usually has a blown thermal cut-out or a faulty heating element. The cut-out is a safety device designed to trip if the internal temperature gets too high, which can happen if the lint filter is blocked. We can test these components during a visit.
If you can hear the motor running but the drum remains still, the drive belt has likely snapped or slipped off the tension pulley. Alternatively, the motor start capacitor might have failed, preventing the motor from generating enough initial force to rotate a heavy load of wet laundry.
Condenser dryers collect extracted moisture in a water container. If the pump that moves water from the base to the container fails, or if the float switch gets stuck, the machine will halt the cycle to prevent flooding. A blocked heat exchanger will also restrict airflow and interrupt the drying process.
