Know the home, know the fault

The parish sits just inside the southern boundary of Dartmoor, positioned within a river valley. There are also much older properties, including a manor house that retains structural elements from the fifteenth century. In larger rural kitchens, built-in combination microwaves are sometimes installed alongside electric ovens to provide extra cooking capacity for a household. In older cottages, space might be tighter, meaning a compact built-in model is fitted into an existing cabinet arrangement to keep the worktops clear. When a combination microwave stops heating but still runs, the issue is usually inside the high-voltage circuit. The magnetron, which generates the microwave energy, can fail, or a high-voltage diode might break down. Turntables that refuse to rotate are another issue. This happens when the small synchronous motor under the floor of the cavity burns out, or if the glass tray is not seated correctly on its coupling. Door latches also take a lot of physical wear from being opened and closed. If the microswitches inside the latch assembly do not engage in the correct sequence, the control board will prevent the appliance from starting as a safety measure. When visiting a property in places like Aish to look at a faulty microwave, we check built-in and combination models directly in the kitchen. The inspection covers the door switches, the turntable motor, the control displays and the internal heating components. We repair electric cooking appliances across the wider parish, though we do not work on gas cookers, gas hobs or any gas equipment.

This happens when a component in the high-voltage circuit fails. The magnetron, which produces the cooking energy, might have stopped working, or a high-voltage diode could be faulty. We inspect these internal parts during a visit to determine exactly which component is preventing the appliance from generating heat.

A turntable usually stops turning because the small synchronous motor located under the cavity floor has burnt out. It can also happen if the glass tray is not sitting correctly on the plastic drive coupling. We can check the motor and the coupling to restore the rotation.

Microwaves have multiple safety microswitches inside the door latch assembly. If the door hooks do not engage these switches in the correct sequence, the main control board will not allow the appliance to start. The switches or the latch mechanism itself may need to be replaced.
