Know the home, know the fault

Properties in this community range from historic houses in a settlement established during the twelfth century to modern spaces, such as the residential apartments created inside former railway workshop buildings. Situated in a river valley next to tidal waters, homes here rely on a variety of kitchen layouts. Whether an electric oven is fitted under a counter in a converted workshop or built into a tall cabinet in an older property near the salt marsh, it needs adequate ventilation to prevent the control panel electronics from overheating. When an electric oven fails to heat, the issue is usually a blown heating element. Fan oven elements can split or blister, which stops them producing heat even when the fan continues to spin and the indicator lights remain on. Uneven cooking is another issue, which points to a failing fan motor or a faulty thermostat struggling to regulate the temperature. If the appliance trips the electrics, it is usually because the insulation inside a heating element has broken down, allowing electrical current to leak to the earth casing. Worn door hinges or torn rubber seals will let heat escape, forcing the appliance to work harder to maintain the set temperature. We only repair electric and induction cooking appliances, so we do not work on gas cookers or gas hobs.

This happens when the circular heating element surrounding the fan motor fails. The element can burn out or split, stopping it from generating heat. Because the fan and the element operate on separate circuits, the fan will continue to circulate cold air.

Tripping is usually caused by an electrical short to earth. This happens when the internal insulation of a heating element degrades, allowing moisture or current to touch the outer metal casing. It can also be caused by a faulty selector switch or damaged wiring behind the control panel.

Uneven cooking in a fan oven points to a problem with air circulation. If the fan motor is failing or moving too slowly, the heat from the element will not distribute evenly throughout the cavity. Another possibility is a faulty thermostat that is failing to regulate the internal temperature correctly.
