Know the home, know the fault
The community sits in a river valley between the main road from Tavistock to Truro and the upper tidal reaches of the water. Properties range from modern residential apartments created in 2004 out of surviving railway workshop buildings, to older houses near historic landmarks like Stannary Palace and St Bartholomew's Church. In any kitchen, whether a historic home near the twelfth-century Norman settlement origins or a recent conversion, extractor hoods manage cooking odours and airborne grease. A working extractor is particularly helpful in open-plan living spaces where cooking smells can easily spread to other rooms, helping to keep the environment comfortable. When an extractor stops pulling air effectively, the issue might be a clogged grease filter restricting the airflow. Fans that will not run at all or have lost suction completely can point to a failed motor or a broken selector switch on the control panel. Noisy or vibrating motors usually indicate worn bearings or a plastic impeller that has become unbalanced over time. Lights and switches that have failed are another issue, leaving the cooking area dark. We check the control boards, lamp holders and internal wiring to find out why the illumination has stopped working, replacing the faulty components to restore function. We visit homes across the area, including nearby places like Penknight, to repair extractor hoods in the kitchen. During a visit, we look at fans that have stopped working, investigate noisy motors, and trace electrical faults in the lighting circuits. We also repair other electric cooking appliances, though we do not work on gas cookers, gas hobs or any gas appliance.

Call 01752 922765A vibrating noise usually points to an issue with the extractor fan motor or its impeller. The plastic impeller blades can become unbalanced or damaged, causing the whole unit to shake when running. Worn motor bearings will also create a loud rumbling sound. We inspect the motor assembly to identify the exact fault.
When the lights fail and changing the bulbs does not help, the fault is normally in the electrical supply to the lamp holders. This can be caused by a broken light switch on the main control panel, a blown internal fuse, or damaged wiring. We trace the circuit to locate the electrical failure.
Poor suction is a direct result of blocked grease filters that restrict the air from passing through the hood. If the filters are clean but there is still no suction, the fan motor might be failing to spin at the correct speed, or a selector switch could be broken.
