Know the home, know the fault
Some residents live in the old railway workshop buildings that were transformed into apartments. In these varied homes, freezers are placed in kitchens, utility spaces, or sometimes outbuildings. A chest freezer might sit in a garage, while an upright model fits into a fitted kitchen. Wherever the appliance is kept, it needs good airflow around the condenser coils to dissipate heat efficiently. If a freezer is pushed too tightly against a wall, the compressor has to work harder to maintain the correct internal temperature. When a freezer struggles to stay cold enough, the compressor might run constantly, which can trigger a temperature alarm. Heavy ice build-up is another issue that affects both chest and upright models. This ice can cause drawers to stick and reduces the available storage space. Ice accumulation is sometimes caused by a damaged door seal letting warm room air inside, where it condenses and freezes. In frost-free models, a failed defrost heater or a blocked drain hole will also lead to thick frost forming on the evaporator coils, eventually stopping the fan from circulating cold air around the cabinet. When visiting a property, we look at upright and chest freezers that are not freezing or are icing up. We check for door seal faults, investigate temperature alarms, and find out why a motor is running constantly. If you have heavy ice build-up and drawers that stick, we can inspect the defrost system and the thermostat. We also repair other domestic appliances, though we do not work on gas cookers or any gas appliance.

Call 01752 922765A flashing temperature alarm indicates the interior is not cold enough. This happens if the door was left open, a large amount of unfrozen food was just added, or the door seal is failing. It can also point to a fault with the thermostat, the compressor, or a refrigerant issue preventing the appliance from cooling.
Frost-free models use a heater to melt ice off the evaporator coils. If this defrost heater fails, or if the timer controlling it breaks, frost will build up rapidly. A blocked drain channel can also cause water to pool and freeze at the bottom of the compartment, eventually causing drawers to stick.
The compressor motor runs continuously when it struggles to reach the set temperature. This is caused by a damaged lid seal letting warm air in, a faulty thermostat failing to signal that the cabinet is cold enough, or a build-up of dust on the external condenser coils restricting heat transfer.
