Know the home, know the fault
Properties on the western bank of the River Dart estuary range from late sixteenth and early seventeenth-century houses to twentieth-century builds in the Britannia Avenue area. In a tourist destination with medieval and Elizabethan streetscapes, holiday lets and older dwellings often have washing machines fitted into tight spaces under counters or in small utility cupboards. Moving an appliance out for inspection in a property with narrow lanes and stone stairways outside requires a methodical approach, especially when hoses are stretched or plumbed into older pipework behind the cabinets. When a washing machine is squeezed into a compact space, noticing a leak from a door seal, internal hose or the pump area can take time. Water pooling underneath might only become obvious when the machine fails to drain or spin. Faults with draining are sometimes caused by a blocked pump filter or a jammed impeller, which stops the water from emptying and prevents the door lock from releasing at the end of a cycle. If a machine trips the electrics, the issue is often traced to a failed heating element or water reaching a motor connection. Excessive vibration on a spin cycle can point to worn drum bearings or a machine that is no longer sitting level on an uneven floor. When visiting homes in places like Townstal, we diagnose and repair machines that will not drain, spin, fill or start. We look at heating faults, leaks from seals and hoses, and doors that will not open or close. Our home visits also cover machines showing error codes, tripping the electrics, or suffering from noisy drums and excessive vibration on spin. We work on domestic washing machines, washer dryers and other electric appliances, though we do not work on gas cookers or any gas appliance.

Call 01752 922765Excessive vibration usually happens when the machine is not level or the load is unbalanced. Over time, the adjustable feet can move, or the internal suspension dampers may wear out. If the drum makes a loud rumbling noise alongside the vibration, the drum bearings have likely failed and need replacing.
A door will stay locked if the machine detects water still inside the drum. This is usually caused by a blocked pump filter or a kinked drain hose preventing the water from emptying. If the drum is completely empty, the door interlock mechanism itself might have failed and jammed shut.
When a washing machine trips the electrics during a cycle, the heating element is a likely cause. As the element degrades, water can seep into its internal wiring, creating a short circuit to earth. We can test the element with a multimeter and replace it to resolve the electrical fault.
