Know the home, know the fault

In a tourist destination with historic medieval and Elizabethan streetscapes, kitchens are fitted into spaces of all shapes and sizes. Narrow lanes and stone stairways mean built-in electric ovens are a practical choice for many households, as they can be installed at eye level or tucked under a counter. Holiday lets and permanent residences alike rely on these appliances for daily meals. When an oven fails, it disrupts routine cooking, whether it is a built-in single oven or a double unit. Electric ovens develop specific faults over time. A unit that turns on but will not heat up points to a failed element. If the fan runs but the air remains cold, the circular fan element has likely burnt out. Uneven cooking or food burning on one side indicates a faulty thermostat failing to regulate the temperature. Ovens that trip the electrics when switched on can have an earth leak, which happens when an element casing degrades. Mechanical parts also wear down with use. Door hinges lose their tension, preventing the door from closing flush against the frame. When the door seal perishes, heat escapes, causing the appliance to work harder and the control panel to become too hot. We visit homes across the area, including places like Townstal, to repair electric cooking appliances. We look at ovens that will not heat or only heat on some functions, uneven cooking, and fan oven faults. We also investigate appliances that trip the power supply, alongside physical issues with door hinges, seals, and glass. If the unit has faulty thermostats, controls, or clocks, we examine those too. We only work on electric and induction appliances, meaning we do not repair gas cookers or gas hobs.

This happens when the circular fan element at the back of the cavity fails. The fan motor continues to circulate air, but there is no heat being generated. The element needs to be tested for continuity with a multimeter. If the internal wire has broken, the element must be replaced to restore the heating function.

An oven will trip the electrics if there is a short circuit or an earth leak. This is caused by moisture getting into a heating element or the element's outer casing degrading over time. A faulty selector switch or damaged internal wiring can also cause the main breaker to trip immediately upon use.

The hinges on an oven door bear a lot of weight and their internal springs lose tension over time. When this happens, the door will not pull tight against the seal. Heat escapes from the gap, which ruins cooking times and can melt the plastic control knobs above. The hinges need replacing.
