Know the home, know the fault
Working in homes along the western bank of the River Dart estuary means carrying tool kits up stone stairways and navigating narrow lanes. In a tourist destination with lots of holiday accommodation, freestanding electric cookers see heavy use from visiting families cooking large meals. Whether a property is an older house with a compact kitchen or a newer build, a freestanding cooker provides a practical all-in-one cooking solution.
Why electric cookers go wrong
What we look for
When an electric cooker stops working properly, the issue can lie in the hob, the grill or the main oven cavity. Solid plate or radiant ring hobs fail when the internal element breaks down, leaving a cooking zone completely cold. Inside the oven, a fan element might fail, which stops the appliance from heating up even though the circulation fan continues to spin and the indicator light remains on. Grill elements can distort or split over time, causing the appliance to trip the electrics as soon as the function is selected. Control switches also wear out, meaning a hob ring might only work on maximum heat or an oven thermostat fails to regulate the temperature.

When we visit
From your call to repaired
Visiting a property in Townstal or elsewhere in Dartmouth, we look at the specific symptoms your freestanding electric cooker is showing. We check the condition of the door hinges and seals, as heat escaping from the oven cavity can melt control knobs and damage the fascia panel. We test the main heating elements, inspect the selector switches for burnt contacts and trace wiring faults that cause the electrics to trip. Please note that our repair service is for electric and induction models only, as we do not work on gas cookers or any gas appliance.

Call 01752 922765This happens when an electrical component develops an earth fault. A likely cause is a split or degraded heating element in the oven or grill, which allows moisture to reach the internal wiring. A faulty selector switch or damaged terminal block at the back of the cooker can also cause the circuit breaker to trip.
A running fan with no heat points to a failed circular fan element. The element surrounds the fan blade at the back of the cavity and does the actual heating. When the internal wire snaps, the element stops working, but the fan motor and the thermostat light will continue to operate normally.
If a solid plate or radiant ring will not turn down and stays extremely hot, the energy regulator behind the control knob has failed. The regulator is designed to cycle the power on and off to maintain the chosen temperature. When its internal contacts fuse together, it sends continuous power to the hob ring.
