Know the home, know the fault

In a popular tourist spot with many older properties, utility spaces can be restricted. Houses situated among narrow lanes and stone steps might only have room for a stacked laundry setup. When a tumble dryer is fitted into a tight cupboard, airflow can become restricted. A machine needs adequate ventilation to expel warm air. Without good airflow, the appliance has to work harder to dry clothes, putting extra strain on the internal components. Restricted ventilation can lead to a dryer running but failing to heat. The heating element or the thermal overload cutout might trip if the internal temperature gets too high. A drum that will not turn usually points to a snapped drive belt or a worn motor capacitor. If a machine stops mid-cycle or will not start, the door catch, control board or moisture sensors could be at fault. Condenser models rely on a water container and a heat exchanger. If the condenser unit gets blocked with lint, or the pump fails, the machine stops drying effectively. Noisy running is usually a sign of worn drum support rollers or degraded bearings. When we arrive to look at a faulty tumble dryer, we check the main operating parts. We inspect machines that run but do not heat, drums that refuse to turn, and dryers that stop before finishing a cycle. Our visits cover condenser and water container faults, as well as diagnosing noisy running. We repair electric domestic appliances, but we do not work on gas cookers, gas hobs or any gas appliance.

A dryer that tumbles without heating usually has a fault in the heating circuit. The heating element might have burned out, or a thermal overload thermostat could have tripped due to poor airflow. A blocked lint filter or a restricted vent hose will cause the internal temperature to rise, triggering these safety cutouts.

When the motor runs but the drum remains still, the drive belt has usually snapped or slipped off the pulleys. If the machine is completely silent when you press start, the motor capacitor or the control board might have failed. Worn jockey wheels can also jam the drum, preventing it from rotating.

Condenser dryers collect moisture in a water container, which needs emptying regularly. If the container is full or cracked, water will overflow. Leaks also happen when the condenser unit becomes clogged with wet lint, or if the internal pump that moves water from the base to the collection tank fails.
