Homes in Dartmouth

Know the home, know the fault

Properties along the western bank of the River Dart estuary range from late sixteenth and early seventeenth century dwellings to newer housing built around the Britannia Avenue area. Moving a heavy fridge freezer into a kitchen can be demanding where a property sits among medieval and Elizabethan streetscapes with narrow lanes and stone stairways. Integrated models are sometimes chosen to make the most of the available space in older homes, while larger American-style appliances need a solid, level floor to operate correctly. When a unit is not perfectly level, the doors might not seal properly, letting warm air inside. A poor door seal forces the compressor to work harder to maintain the correct temperatures, which can lead to frost and ice build-up inside the freezer compartment. If the defrost heater or timer fails, ice blocks the air vents between the two sections. This results in a fridge that feels warm while the freezer still works. Water leaks inside the cabinet or onto the floor usually point to a blocked defrost drain tube, where condensation freezes and overflows instead of draining away to the evaporation tray above the motor. Faulty controls or a failing fan motor can also cause noisy running and uneven cooling. During a visit, we look at the cooling system, checking for blockages, faulty thermostats, and broken fans. Our domestic appliance repair service covers electric models only, and we do not work on gas appliances.

Ice builds up when warm air enters the cabinet or the automatic defrost system fails. A torn door seal lets room air inside, where the moisture freezes on the back wall. If the seal is intact, the defrost heater, thermostat or timer might be broken, allowing ice to block the cooling vents.

Most fridge freezers use a single compressor to cool the freezer, then a fan blows cold air up into the fridge. If the fan motor fails or ice blocks the air damper between the two compartments, the cold air cannot circulate. The freezer stays frozen, but the fridge temperature rises.

Condensation naturally forms on the back wall of the fridge and runs down into a small drain hole. If this drain gets blocked by food debris or dust, the water overflows and pools under the bottom drawers. We clear the blockage and check the drain tube at the back.
