Know the home, know the fault
Properties set along the western side of the River Dart estuary range from late sixteenth and early seventeenth-century houses to newer homes around the Britannia Avenue area. In a tourist destination featuring historic Elizabethan streetscapes with narrow lanes and stone steps, moving large domestic appliances into older properties is difficult. Once a fridge is in place, it is expected to stay there for years. Whether a kitchen is in a historic property or a modern build, the appliance needs adequate ventilation around the condenser coils to dissipate heat. If a fridge is pushed too tightly against a wall, the compressor has to work harder to maintain the internal temperature. When a fridge struggles to cool evenly, the issue might be a failing thermostat or a blocked air damper restricting cold air from circulating. Ice building up on the back wall of the compartment points to a problem with the defrost system, such as a faulty heater or timer. Water pooling inside the cabinet or leaking onto the floor is typically caused by a blocked defrost drain, which forces condensation to overflow. A fridge that runs constantly or makes new clicking noises might have a struggling compressor or a worn start relay. Even a simple issue like a split door seal will let warm air enter, causing the motor to run longer than necessary. When visiting homes in places like Townstal, we repair fridges that are too warm, too cold, noisy or leaking. During a visit, we look at appliances that are warm or not cooling evenly, as well as checking for water pooling inside or on the floor. We also investigate ice building up on the back wall, constant running, clicking or new noises. Our repairs cover faulty lights, thermostats and door seals. We do not work on gas appliances.

Call 01752 922765Water pooling under the salad crisper drawers is usually caused by a blocked defrost drain. Condensation runs down the back wall of the fridge and should exit through a small hole. If crumbs or food packaging block this drain, the water overflows into the base of the appliance. Clearing the blockage allows the water to drain away.
A clicking sound coming from the back of the appliance indicates that the compressor is trying to start but failing. This happens when the start relay or the overload protector develops a fault. The click is the component cutting out to protect the motor. Replacing the faulty relay or capacitor restores power to the compressor.
Ice builds up on the rear wall when warm air enters the cabinet or the defrost system fails. A split door seal lets room-temperature air inside, creating excess condensation that freezes. Alternatively, a faulty thermostat might force the compressor to run continuously, never giving the appliance a chance to run its natural defrost cycle.
