Know the home, know the fault

The wider parish sits in a river valley on the southern edge of Dartmoor, containing dispersed farmhouses and hamlets like Lutton. In older rural houses, washing machines are sometimes installed in unheated utility spaces or outbuildings. When temperatures drop, washing machines kept in cold areas can suffer from frozen inlet hoses or residual water freezing inside the drain pump, which prevents the appliance from working. A machine that will not drain or spin usually has a blockage in the pump filter or a failed drain pump motor. If the drum refuses to turn but fills with water, the carbon brushes on the main drive motor might have worn down, or the drive belt could have snapped. Leaks often originate from a split door seal, a loose internal hose, or a cracked pump housing. When a washing machine trips the electrics, the heating element is a likely culprit, as the internal insulation breaks down and allows water to reach the electrical connections. Excessive vibration and a loud rumbling noise on the spin cycle point to worn drum bearings. We visit homes near landmarks like Brent Hill to diagnose and repair washing machines that will not start, fill, spin or drain. Our home visit involves checking for heating faults, inspecting door seals and internal hoses for leaks, and testing door locks that refuse to open or close. We also investigate appliances showing error codes, those tripping the electrics, or machines with noisy drums and excessive vibration on spin.

A machine that stops mid-cycle often has a draining issue. If the appliance cannot empty its water within a set time, the control board will halt the programme to prevent flooding. This is usually caused by a blocked pump filter, a kinked drain hose, or a faulty drain pump motor that needs to be replaced.

The door interlock mechanism is designed to stay closed if there is still water inside the drum. If the machine has drained completely but the door remains stuck, the lock itself or the handle mechanism might have broken. A faulty control board can also fail to send the release signal to the lock.

Leaks from the bottom of the appliance frequently come from the drain pump area. The pump housing can crack, or the filter seal might degrade. Internal hoses connecting the dispenser drawer to the drum can also split or work loose, allowing water to run down the inside of the cabinet and pool underneath.
