Know the home, know the fault

Some homes near St Petroc's Church even sit close to a manor house with sections dating back to the fifteenth century. In older rural properties on the southern edge of Dartmoor, kitchens might have uneven floors or limited ventilation, which can affect how a freestanding electric cooker sits and operates. Modern homes tend to have standard appliance spaces, but any freestanding cooker needs adequate clearance to prevent overheating when the oven or grill is in use. A freestanding electric cooker houses several heating elements and controls in one unit. When an oven or grill stops heating, the fault usually lies with a blown element or a failed thermostat. Hob rings or zones that do not heat up might have a faulty switch or a damaged element beneath the surface. If a cooker trips the electrics, it is usually caused by moisture or a breakdown in the insulation around one of the heating elements. Door faults, such as worn hinges or damaged seals, allow heat to escape, forcing the appliance to work harder to maintain temperature and potentially damaging the control knobs above. During a visit, we look at oven and grill heating faults, hob rings or zones not heating, cookers that trip the electrics, and control, switch or door faults. Whether a property is in the village centre or out towards the hamlet of Harbourneford, we repair appliances in customers' homes. Please note that our cooking appliance repairs are electric and induction only, and we do not work on gas cookers or any gas appliance.

This happens when an electrical component develops an insulation fault, allowing current to leak to earth. The usual cause is a split or degraded oven heating element, but faulty switches, damaged wiring or a broken grill element can also trip your household electrics. We can test the internal components to locate the exact fault.

If the fan runs and the indicator light comes on but there is no heat, the fan oven element has likely failed. When the whole oven is dead, the issue might be a faulty thermostat, a broken selector switch or a problem with the main terminal block at the back of the appliance.

When a solid hotplate or radiant ring on a freestanding cooker stays on maximum heat regardless of the dial position, the energy regulator behind the control knob has usually failed. This regulator controls the power sent to the ring, and a replacement is required to restore adjustable temperature control. We look at all control and switch faults.
