Know the home, know the fault

The settlement originally developed as a centre for wool and markets. Today, in a rural parish setting on the edge of Dartmoor, utility rooms, porches or outbuildings are sometimes used to house laundry appliances. A tumble dryer kept in an unheated space like a stone outhouse can struggle when ambient temperatures drop, as condenser models rely on a temperature difference to extract moisture efficiently. Ventilation is also important for traditional vented models to prevent damp air building up indoors. When a dryer runs but produces no heat, a failed heating element or thermal overload cut-out is the likely cause. If the drum will not turn at all, a snapped drive belt or a worn motor capacitor is the standard fault. Machines that stop mid-cycle or refuse to start might have a faulty door switch, a blocked lint filter or a problem with the moisture sensor. Condenser and water container faults can prevent the appliance from emptying properly, leaving clothes damp at the end of a cycle. Noisy running points to worn support rollers, tensioner pulleys or drum bearings, which degrade over time from the strain of tumbling heavy wet loads. Whether a repair is needed at a farmhouse near Harbourneford or a property closer to the village centre, we repair appliances in customers' homes. During a visit, we look at dryers that will not heat, turn or finish a cycle. We investigate condenser units, check water containers, inspect drive belts and test heating elements. We work on electric cooking appliances but do not work on gas cookers or any gas appliance. We also travel to nearby towns such as Ivybridge, Buckfastleigh and Totnes.

A dryer that turns normally without getting warm points to a blown heating element or a tripped thermal overload cut-out. The thermostats monitor the internal temperature, and if airflow is restricted by a blocked lint filter, the safety cut-out will activate to prevent overheating. We test these components during visits.

If you can hear the motor running but the drum remains still, the drive belt has likely snapped or slipped off the tensioner pulley. If the machine is completely silent when you press start, the motor capacitor or the main control board might have failed and will need an inspection.

Clothes stay damp if the condenser unit is blocked with wet lint, preventing the machine from extracting moisture from the air. A faulty water pump or a blocked hose leading to the water container can also stop the appliance from emptying properly. Cleaning the condenser box helps maintain drying performance.
