Know the home, know the fault

The largest settlement in the national park sits right next to the A38, having grown from a farming settlement by a stream into a tin mining administration centre. With a culinary academy established in the north of the area, residents might be inspired to cook more at home. A busy kitchen relies on a working extractor hood to clear steam and cooking smells, especially in open-plan spaces or older houses where ventilation can be a challenge. When an extractor fails, cooking odours linger and grease can settle on cabinets. A hood might lose suction if the motor struggles to turn the fan blades, or it might stop running entirely due to a faulty control switch. Motors that vibrate or make a loud grinding noise usually have worn bearings or damaged impellers. Sometimes the issue is simply that the lights have failed, making it hard to see the hob. We check the switches, the wiring to the light fittings, and the fan assembly. We travel up to repair cooker hoods in the area, as well as in nearby places like Buckfastleigh. During a visit, we examine fans that will not run or have lost suction, investigate noisy or vibrating motors, and inspect lights and switches that have failed. We carry out all work in your kitchen. Please note that while we repair electric cooking appliances, we do not work on gas cookers, gas hobs or any gas appliance.

A vibrating noise usually points to a problem with the motor or the fan impeller. If the plastic blades become damaged or unbalanced, the whole unit will shake when turned on. Worn motor bearings can also cause a loud rumbling sound. We inspect the fan assembly and motor to find the source of the vibration.

If changing the bulbs does not help, the fault might lie in the light switch, the internal wiring, or the transformer if your hood uses low-voltage halogen or LED lights. Heat and grease from the hob can sometimes damage these electrical components. We test the switches and wiring to restore the lighting over your cooking area.

Poor suction happens when the motor is failing, the fan blades are loose, or the grease filters are heavily blocked. Restricted airflow forces the motor to work harder, which can eventually cause it to fail.
