Know the home, know the fault

The origins of this settlement lie in an old farming community built around a stream, and today it remains the largest town within the local national park. When a fridge is heavily used, the door seals can wear down or split, letting warm room air inside. This forces the compressor to run constantly to maintain the set temperature, which can lead to ice building up on the back wall or the appliance becoming too cold. If the internal temperature is too warm or not cooling evenly, the thermostat might be failing to signal the cooling system. Water pooling inside the cabinet or leaking onto the floor usually points to a blocked defrost drain, while clicking sounds or new mechanical noises suggest the compressor or its start relay is struggling to operate. During a visit, we look at fridges that are warm, noisy or leaking. We check for faulty lights, test thermostats, inspect door seals for gaps, and investigate constant running or ice build-up. We also cover nearby places like Buckfastleigh for domestic appliance repairs. While we repair a wide range of electric kitchen equipment, we do not work on gas appliances.

Water pooling inside the cabinet usually happens when the defrost drain becomes blocked with food debris or packaging. During the normal defrost cycle, condensation drips down the back wall but cannot escape through the blocked hole. This water eventually overflows into the base of the appliance and can leak onto the floor.

A fridge compressor will run continuously if warm air is entering the cabinet, which is usually caused by a split or loose door seal. It can also happen if the thermostat is faulty and fails to tell the system that the correct temperature has been reached. Keeping the condenser coils clean helps the appliance cool more efficiently.

Ice forms on the back wall when the internal temperature drops too low or when excessive moisture enters the cabinet. A damaged door seal lets humid room air inside, which then freezes on the cold evaporator plate. A failing thermostat can also cause the cooling system to overwork and freeze.
