Know the home, know the fault
The civil parish is mostly urban in character, meaning homes are often built close together. In older terraces or flats with compact kitchens, effective ventilation is essential to manage moisture and cooking smells. Extractor hoods work hard in these environments, whether they vent directly outside or recirculate air through carbon filters. In neighbourhoods experiencing higher levels of deprivation, repairing an existing extractor fan makes financial sense compared to the cost of buying a completely new unit. When an extractor loses suction, the issue often lies with a heavily blocked grease mesh or a failing fan motor. Motors that have drawn in grease and steam over several years can become unbalanced, leading to loud vibrations, a rattling sound, or a grinding noise when the appliance is switched on. Sometimes the fan will not run at all because the mechanical slider switch or the internal circuit board has failed. Lighting problems are another reason for a repair visit. If replacing the bulb does not restore the illumination over the hob, the fault might be a damaged lamp holder, a blown transformer, or a faulty rocker switch on the main control panel. Our domestic appliance repair service operates from Plymouth. When inspecting a cooker hood in your kitchen, we look at fans that will not run or have lost their suction power. We also examine noisy or vibrating motors, and test lights and switches that have failed to respond. We carry out all repair work in your home.

Call 01752 922765A vibrating noise usually indicates that the fan motor has become unbalanced. This happens when grease builds up unevenly on the fan blades over time. It can also be caused by worn motor bearings or loose mounting screws. We can inspect the motor housing to find the source of the vibration.
If changing the bulbs has not fixed the issue, the fault is likely within the internal wiring. Cooker hoods use transformers to step down the voltage for halogen or LED lights, and these components can fail. A broken light switch or a damaged lamp holder will also prevent the bulbs from illuminating.
Poor suction is frequently caused by saturated grease filters or blocked carbon filters in recirculating models. If the filters are clean, the motor itself might be failing and spinning too slowly to draw air effectively. A blockage in the external venting duct can also restrict airflow and reduce suction power.
