Know the home, know the fault
The local landscape is generally steep, rising from the River Kensey up towards the castle, which makes the town a popular destination for tourists visiting the Launceston Steam Railway. In these varied homes, extractor hoods are installed in different ways. Some vent directly through thick external walls, while others are set up to recirculate air back into the kitchen. In either setup, the hood has to work hard to remove steam and cooking odours, relying on a clear path through the grease filters and the motor housing. When an extractor loses suction, the issue might be a clogged grease filter restricting the airflow, or the fan motor itself could be failing. Motors that vibrate or make excessive noise usually have worn bearings or an imbalance in the fan blades caused by a build-up of cooking residue over time. Another issue is lighting failure. If replacing the bulb does not restore the light, the fault could lie in the switch mechanism, the internal wiring, or the control board. Extractor switches are particularly vulnerable to grease ingress, which can cause the buttons to stick or the electrical contacts to fail, preventing the fan or lights from turning on. During a visit, we dismantle the casing to look at fans that will not run or have lost suction, noisy or vibrating motors, and lights or switches that have failed. We repair electric appliances in customers' homes, but we do not work on gas cookers, gas hobs or any gas appliance.

Call 01752 922765A vibrating noise usually indicates an issue with the fan motor or the blades. Over time, grease and dirt can build up unevenly on the fan blades, causing them to become unbalanced. Alternatively, the motor bearings might be worn out. We can inspect the motor housing to identify the source of the vibration.
If changing the bulbs does not fix the issue, the fault is likely electrical. Grease can get into the switch mechanism, causing the contacts to fail. The problem could also be a blown transformer, damaged internal wiring, or a faulty control board. We look at failed lights and switches during our visits.
Poor suction is frequently caused by saturated grease filters that block the airflow. If the filters are clean, the fan motor might be failing to reach its full speed, or there could be an obstruction in the external venting duct.
