Know the home, know the fault

Said to have more listed buildings per head than any other town, kitchens in these historic properties can have unconventional layouts. A freestanding electric cooker is a practical choice when space does not allow for built-in units. The area also attracts tourists interested in its transition town status, meaning some local houses serve as holiday accommodation where cooking appliances see heavy use by different visitors. When a freestanding cooker stops working, the issue might be isolated to the oven, the grill, or the hob on top. A fan oven that blows cold air usually has a failed circular heating element, while a grill that refuses to heat might have a damaged top element or a faulty energy regulator. On the hob, solid plates or radiant rings can burn out, leaving a cooking zone completely cold. Sometimes the entire appliance trips the household electrics, which points to an earth fault in one of the heating elements or a degraded terminal block at the back of the machine. Control knobs and selector switches also wear down over time, making it difficult to select the correct temperature. We visit homes across the civil parish, including areas like Bridgetown, to repair domestic appliances. During a visit, we look at oven and grill heating faults, hob rings or zones not heating, cookers that trip the electrics, and issues with controls, switches and doors. We only work on electric and induction cooking appliances, meaning we do not repair gas cookers or any gas equipment.

This happens when an electrical component develops an earth fault. The issue is usually a failed heating element in the oven, grill, or hob. Moisture inside the element casing or a degraded terminal block at the back of the cooker can also cause the electrics to trip.

If the fan is spinning but there is no heat, the circular element surrounding the fan blade has likely failed. The element is responsible for generating the heat that the fan distributes. A faulty thermostat or a broken selector switch can also prevent the oven from heating up.

A single cold ring on an electric hob points to a break in the heating circuit for that specific zone. The radiant element or solid hotplate may have burned out, or the energy regulator switch behind the control knob might have failed and stopped sending power to the ring.
