Know the home, know the fault

The combination of older properties and modern family living shapes the kitchens found around this South Devon estuary settlement. In the centre, where buildings from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries remain, kitchen layouts can be quite traditional, sometimes favouring a freestanding electric cooker over built-in appliances. The area is also a popular tourist destination, meaning some properties serve as holiday accommodation where cooking appliances see intense seasonal use by different guests. Meanwhile, the presence of a large secondary school serving over a thousand pupils points to busy family homes where a cooker is relied upon daily to feed a household. When a freestanding electric cooker develops a fault, the symptoms usually point to specific components. If an oven or grill stops heating but the fan still runs and the indicator light comes on, the heating element has likely failed. Hob rings or zones that refuse to heat up, or stay on full power regardless of the dial position, point to a faulty energy regulator or a damaged switch. Sometimes an appliance will trip the household electrics the moment a particular function is selected, which indicates an earth leak, usually from a split element or degraded wiring insulation. Door faults are another issue, where worn hinges or a degraded seal prevent the oven from retaining heat, leading to uneven cooking times and wasted energy. Please note that we only repair electric and induction appliances and do not work on gas cookers. Diagnosis covers testing oven and grill heating elements, checking hob rings or zones that are not heating, and inspecting controls, switches and door mechanisms. If a cooker is tripping the electrics, we test the internal components to locate the short circuit.

This usually happens when an internal component develops an earth leak. The most frequent cause is a split or blistered oven heating element, which allows moisture to enter and short out the circuit. Faulty switches, degraded wiring insulation, or a failing grill element can also cause the household electrics to trip immediately upon use.

If the fan is spinning and the thermostat light illuminates but there is no heat, the fan oven element has almost certainly failed. Elements degrade over time through normal heating and cooling cycles until the internal filament breaks. We can test the element for continuity and replace it to restore the heating function.

A solid hotplate that fails to heat up usually has a broken internal element or a faulty energy regulator behind the control knob. If the plate gets stuck on maximum heat regardless of the dial setting, the regulator switch is the likely culprit. We test both the hotplate and the switch to identify the broken part.
