Know the home, know the fault
Properties around Fowey range from primary residences to secondary homes. With tourism accounting for more than half the local jobs, many houses are used seasonally. A freezer in a property that is unoccupied for weeks might be left running empty or switched off entirely. When filled suddenly after a long period of disuse, the compressor has to work hard to bring the internal temperature down. In older buildings near the seventh-century church, kitchens might be compact, meaning upright freezers are sometimes pushed tightly against walls, restricting the airflow needed to cool the condenser coils. When a freezer struggles to maintain its temperature, an alarm will usually sound and the motor may run constantly. This constant running indicates the appliance is trying to compensate for warm air entering the cabinet. A split door seal is a known cause, letting room-temperature air seep inside. The moisture in this air freezes on the interior walls, leading to heavy ice build-up. Once ice forms thickly around the evaporator, it acts as an insulator, preventing the appliance from cooling properly. This ice can also cause plastic drawers to stick. If the cabinet is not cold enough, there might be a fault with the start relay or the thermostat. We travel across to repair upright and chest freezers in homes from the centre out towards Readymoney. During a visit, we look at the door seals to check for gaps, test the thermostat, and inspect the compressor. If a freezer is icing up, we check the defrost heater to find out why the cycle is failing. We repair domestic appliances in customers' homes, though we only work on electric appliances and do not repair gas cookers or gas hobs.

Call 01752 922765Heavy ice build-up usually happens when warm air gets inside the cabinet. This is caused by a damaged or dirty door seal that stops the lid from closing completely. Moisture in the room air turns to ice on the cold interior walls. We look at the seals and hinges to resolve this.
A temperature alarm sounds when the internal cabinet is not cold enough to keep food safely frozen. The compressor might be running constantly to try and lower the temperature, but failing due to a faulty thermostat, a broken start relay, or restricted airflow around the condenser coils at the back.
Drawers that stick are usually trapped by excess ice forming on the shelves and runners. This happens when the automatic defrost system fails to clear the frost. We inspect the defrost heater, the defrost timer, and the drain hole to find out why the appliance is icing up so heavily.
