Know the home, know the fault
In older houses, kitchens are sometimes smaller, meaning a chest freezer is kept in an outbuilding or utility space, whereas upright models are usually integrated into the main kitchen. Wherever a freezer is situated, it needs good airflow around the condenser coils to work efficiently. When a freezer starts running constantly or triggers a temperature alarm, it is struggling to maintain its internal climate. Heavy ice build-up is a typical issue that leaves drawers sticking and reduces storage space. This happens when warm air enters the cabinet, which points to a door seal fault or a door that has been left slightly open. If an upright or chest model is not cold enough but the compressor is running, the defrost system might have failed, causing ice to block the evaporator fan. Alternatively, a faulty thermostat will fail to signal the compressor to turn on, leaving the appliance completely thawed. We repair appliances in customers' homes. When inspecting a freezer, we look at why it is icing up or failing to freeze. We check the condition of the door seals, test the thermostat and examine the defrost heater and timer. If the motor is running continuously, we assess the condenser coils and airflow to find out why the appliance is working harder than it should.

Call 01752 922765Thick ice builds up when warm air enters the cabinet and freezes. This is usually caused by a damaged or split door seal that lets room air seep inside. It can also happen if the defrost heater or timer fails, preventing the appliance from melting away the natural frost that accumulates during normal operation.
A freezer runs constantly when it cannot reach its target temperature. This happens if the condenser coils are covered in thick dust, restricting airflow and making the compressor work harder. A failing thermostat might also fail to signal the motor to switch off, or a partial refrigerant issue could be stopping the cabinet from getting cold enough.
The temperature alarm sounds to warn you that the interior is too warm. This can occur if the door has been left open, or if a large amount of unfrozen food was just added. If the door is closed and the alarm continues, there may be a fault with the compressor, the start relay or the main control board.
